It is not necessary a study to realize that the average *urban* person spends most of their time indoors. Perhaps that’s the reason why the contact with nature gives so many positive vibes: it’s calming, relaxing, revitalizing and so on.

That is why trends like biophilic interior design are gaining more followers. We are looking for a bigger connection with nature, a more tranquil and peaceful state of mind, in our own home.

First, what is biophilic interior design?

Biophilia is a term used by Dr. Edward O. Wilson, a Harvard naturalist, to describe the human tendency to interact and commune with nature. Therefore, biophilic design is the creation of a connection between buildings and landscape. On an interior design take, it is about embracing natural resources indoors suppressing the wall barriers.

How to use biophilic interior design in your home

Let’s start with the basics: air and light. When in contact with nature, the daylight and fresh air are the must haves. At home, an open window is the simplest way to let nature in. The smell of the rain, the flowers blossoming and the birds singing.

Take the most advantage of the sunny light in your home. Even if you don’t have a backyard or a patio, that corner that receives daylight can be your cozy space, to work or relax.

Bringing as much outside in as possible is the basic practice when adopting the biophilic interior design. Natural elements such as wood, stone and plants can give us the sensorial experience we have in nature.

When it comes to senses, vision and touch also take a part in how we connect with nature. Surround yourself with natural shapes and forms that resemblance the waves, mountains and flowers. Curvy shapes and irregular patterns can be found all around the (outside) world, so why not implement it indoors?

To enhance the nature connection, observe the ecosystem around you and copy it in your home. Biomimicry is a long time practice of learning with nature and implementing its approach on our human lives. What nature gift can you adopt in your home? Perhaps the variety of landscapes – does your rooms all look the same? – or the different textures and shapes.

Observe nature around you and embrace its qualities into your home. It will contribute to a better wellbeing, mood and overall health.
